This is a small part of the original Luftwaffe Square Grid Map. It shows the Straits of Kerch between the eastern tip of the Crimea (Kerch Peninsula with the city of Kerch, "Kertsch") in the west--dividing the Sea of Azov ("Asowsche Meer") in the north from the Black Sea in the south. On the eastern side of the Straits of Kerch, the northwestern tip of the Caucasus--the Taman Peninsula--is seen. The large figures (66, 76, 86, etc) represent the Grosstrapeze. The unbroken lines represent the "borders" between the various Grosstrapeze. The broken lines represent the "borders" between the Mitteltrapeze in each Grosstrapez. The Mitteltrapeze are numbered from 1 through 8 starting with the area in the northwestern corner and ending in the southeastern corner.
Hence:
The city of Novorossiysk is located in Mitteltrapez No. 4 of Grosstrapez 75. Thus, Novorossiysk is located in Planquadrat 754. . . plus, at the end, the Kleintrapez. Since each Mitteltrapez is divided into nine Kleintrapeze (each measuring approximately only 9 x 11 kilometers), numbered from 1 through 9, we find that Novorossiysk is located in Kleintrapez 2, i.e. in Planquadrat 7542. . . plus, at the end, the Meldetrapez. Each Meldetrapez and has an area of approximately 3 x 4 kilometers. In the system used until April 30, 1943, there were only four Meldetrapeze in each Kleintrapez, numbered from 1 through 4. Thus, we find that the LaGG-3 reported shot down by Hauptmann Josef Haiböck at 0915 hours on April 17, 1943 in PQ 75422, apparently crashed just southeast of Novorossiysk. To be sure of the exact location, we need a map with a larger scale.
The standard Luftwaffe Square Grid Map that I have used is in 1 : 2,000,000 and Mercator Projection. The scale on your screen depends on . . . your screen. But the distance from the west to the east of each Grosstrapez is 70 km.
All above is in Zusatzzahlgebiet 34 Ost.
